Russian Disinformation in Canada
Russian disinformation is rampant in Canada and around the world. Recently, as part of a disinformation campaign, a website has been working to undermine support for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. This website has produced more than a dozen articles about Canadian politics, to boost support for opposition, Poilievre.
This is part of a coordinated campaign. The website, called Reliable Recent News, has been identified by officials in Europe and the U.S. as a source for pro-Kremlin articles, which are shared through a network of affiliated sites disguised as legitimate news outlets.
The articles from Reliable Recent News about Canadian politics focuses on controversies surrounding the Liberal government, often providing misleading descriptions of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s policies.
There are many misleading articles against Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the content seeks to spread disinformation and divide Canadians.
Before that, Canadian officials have also warned about a Russian propaganda campaign that is spreading disinformation online.
There’s a need to stop Russian Propaganda in Canada.
The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security reported that people associated with RT, formerly known as Russia Today, have been operating a social media bot farm under the direction of the Russian government.
Kremlin, on many occasions, has tried to spread disinformation against Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Right-wing influencers in Canada have also been identified as collaborating with Russians. Tenet Media founder Lauren Chen allegedly took funds from a pro-Moscow organisation and generated content that favoured Far-right Donald Trump.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is aware of this and taking steps to solve this issue.
