Prime Minister Justin Trudeau hosted French President Emmanuel Macron in Canada from September 25 to 26, 2024. The visit included stops in Ottawa, Ontario, and Montréal, Quebec, and intended to strengthen the relationship between our nations while advancing mutual priorities.

The leaders announced three key declarations that will align the efforts of Canada and France in preserving peace and security, undertaking ambitious climate action, protecting the environment, and responsibly harnessing the full potential of artificial intelligence (AI).

The first of these three declarations, titled the Canada-France Declaration on a Stronger Defence and Security Partnership, emphasises the unwavering commitment of both Canada and France to support Ukraine amid Russian aggression. It also reinforces contributions to regional stability and safety in the Indo-Pacific while highlighting the collaboration in emergency management, modernising our armed forces, and addressing foreign interference.

Building on the achievements from the recent United Nations General Assembly and the Summit of the Future, Prime Minister Trudeau and President Macron talked about the urgent need for ongoing efforts to fight climate change and safeguard our oceans. In the Canada-France Declaration on the Ocean, the leaders stressed the crucial importance of oceans for the environment, climate, economy, and global food and energy security.

To further these initiatives, Prime Minister Trudeau announced Canada’s membership in the Paris Pact for People and the Planet.

Canada is a leader in artificial intelligence. During the visit, the Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and President Macron also met with AI experts and industry leaders to understand the advantages and challenges of the emerging technology and how to use it for the betterment of humanity.

GPAI’s two centres of expertise have been established in Canada and France to advance development in the AI industry. To build on this progress, Prime Minister Trudeau and the President introduced the Canada-France Declaration on Artificial Intelligence. Ensuring the safe use of AI is essential for upholding human rights and democratic principles.

During the visit, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and President Macron, best friends and strongest allies, rekindled their bromance, which filled the hearts of both countries with love and warmth.

Prime Minister Trudeau wrapped up with this thought: “In an uncertain world, friendships matter.”

Long live the friendship between Canada and France!
