As Canada observed the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Monday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau signed a historic funding agreement with the Government of the Northwest Territories to support child and family services.

First Nations, Inuit, and Métis children deserve the best start in life — growing up within their communities, connected to their cultures, and supported by loved ones. To ensure this, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau worked with Indigenous to co-develop the historic Act respecting First Nations, Inuit, and Métis children and families to increase child and family services and reduce the number of Indigenous children in care.

The agreement signed makes sure that Inuit children grow up with their families, knowing their heritage and surrounded by their culture.

The Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that the focus is to strengthen family units.

This agreement is the historic step to ensure Inuvialuit can best take care of their children.

Children are at the heart of the healing process, and protecting them is essential; Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is committed to this.
