Canadian Multiculturalism Policy
On October 8th, 1971 in the House of Commons, Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau delivered a historic speech and declared multiculturalism an official government policy.
The reason behind this policy was to uphold cultural freedom for every Canadian and recognise various contributions they make to Canadian society.
Multiculturalism was a policy measure to bring the country together, address the francophone nationalism, and promote the cultural diversity across the nation.
The Canadian Multiculturalism Act was enacted in 1988, affirming the government’s commitment to ensuring that every citizen has an equal opportunity to participate in the social, cultural, economic, and political life of the country.
Canada was the first country in the world to implement a multicultural policy, which enshrined in law the federal government’s commitment to promoting and maintaining a diverse, multicultural society.
Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau stated that multiculturalism was the best way of assuring the cultural diversity of all Canadians. He declared that, “the government will support and encourage the various cultures and ethnic groups that contribute to our society.
