Canada is a leader in research and technological innovation. Canadian scientists and researchers are addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges for the benefit of everyone.

Recently, a Canadian, Geofrey Hinton, “the Godfather of AI” was honoured with the Nobel Peace Prize in Physics for his groundbreaking contributions to artificial intelligence, specifically in the development of neural networks.

His research has had a profound impact across every field, from healthcare to technology.

Through his pioneering work that increases human understanding, Hinton is working for technological progress but also fostering peaceful solutions to the global challenges.

“I’m flabbergasted,” Hinton told the panel gathered at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm by phone. “I had no idea this would happen. I’m very surprised.”

A member of the Nobel committee, Ellen, told that he applied key principles from physics to create artificial neural networks that serve as associative memories and detect structures in vast data sets.

She explained that these networks have not only advanced physics research but are essential to technologies like facial recognition and language translation.

Hinton, often referred to as the ‘godfather of AI,’ pioneered a method that autonomously identifies properties in data and performs tasks such as recognising specific elements within images.

Hinton said that he believes the impact of advancements in artificial intelligence will be like the Industrial Revolution, gaining significant productivity gains and creating efficiencies across various sectors, including healthcare.

He also said, but we need to worry about how to keep it under control.

We are so glad to have a mind like Geoffrey, developing safe and responsible AI for the world.
