Canada’s Historic Housing Plan to Solve the Crisis

Everyone deserves a place to call home, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is making this a reality.

Opposition ‘leader’ or should we call him a ‘politician’? Poilievre has spread so many lies and misinformation, from the housing crisis in Canada to Prime Minister Trudeau’s leadership to solve this crisis.

First, the housing crisis has emerged as one of the most pressing challenges in urban areas around the globe. It isn’t just a Canadian issue—it’s a global issue.

Here are the cities ranked worst in terms of housing market affordability on a global basis. (Demographia)

The report talks about the middle-income housing affordability in different countries:

  • Australia
  • China (Hong Kong)
  • Ireland
  • New Zealand
  • Singapore
  • United Kingdom
  • United States

For over a decade now, Hong Kong has the top spot as the least affordable market in the world. The only city to be even less affordable with each passing year is Los Angeles.

Another report from Our World in Data measures the number of people experiencing homelessness per 100,000 people. This data is collected by counting those living on the streets or staying in shelters on a designated night each year.

So there are many countries experiencing homelessness right now, and Poilievre’s claim that we have it worst is false and misleading.

The provincial government and opposition parties initially placed the blame on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. However, even after the government stepped up and introduced a historic housing plan, they continued to lie and misinform Canadians.

Ottawa already is playing a leadership role in housing in Canada from coast to coast to coast. In 2017, two years after Prime Minister Trudeau took office, the National Housing Strategy (NHS) was launched, followed by the 2019 enactment of the National Housing Strategy Act.

To tackle with the emerging housing crisis, On April 12th, 2024, Prime Minister Trudeau released a new ambitious plan, under which millions of new homes for Canadians will be built.

Canada met the moment after World War II by prioritising construction, and it’s doing so again in 2024.

This housing plan is about:

  1. Building more homes by bringing down the cost of housing construction, and changing the way the manufacturers build the homes
  2. Making it easier to own or rent a home
  3. Building homes for students, seniors, persons with disabilities, families and ending the chronic homelessness in Canada.

This comprehensive housing plan is designed to address the housing crisis in Canada and will be tackled for generations to come. It’s long-term and sustainable.

Under this plan, around 4 million homes will be built for Canadians, marking a significant scale-up from prior efforts to address the national housing crisis.

It is amazing to see Prime Minister Trudeau take a leadership role in solving the housing crisis through a comprehensive approach with significant new investments and a suite of measures.
